Sales of anime on Blu-ray Disc for the period between December 27, 2010 and June 26, 2011 jumped 22.8 percent, totaling 17.1262 billion yen (about US$218.3 million). Anime Blu-ray sales made up 57.2 percent of the total Blu-ray market in Japan in the first half of 2011.
Overall Blu-ray sales for the first half of 2011 totaled 29.9475 billion yen (about US$381.7 million), up 31.6 percent from the same period last year, and reaching the highest levels since Oricon began tracking Blu-ray sales in 2004.
Anime DVD sales, however, were down 24.4 percent compared to the same period last year, totaling 19.6646 billion yen (about US$250.6 million), and making up 18.8 percent of the total DVD market in Japan. DVD sales in general were down 13.5 percent compared to last year.
DVD sales made up 77.8 percent of the home video market for this time period, and Blu-ray sales made up 22.2 percent. Total home video sales were down 6.3 percent from the same period last year. Since the anime DVD market is still larger than the anime Blu-ray Disc market, the overall anime home video market was also down in the first half of 2011.
