Manga creator Hekiru Hikawa reported on Sunday that he will end his Pani Poni series in the October issue of Square Enix's Monthly G Fantasy magazine, which will ship in September. The 17th and final ("for now") compiled book volume will then ship on November 25.
The special limited first edition of the 17th volume will bundle a music CD with the character Becky (Chiwa Saito) singing the Pani Poni Dash! anime's opening theme songs — "Kiiroi Vacances," "Roulette Roulette," and "Shōjo Q." According to Hikawa, the volume will also include a one-shot Azumanga Daioh/Pani Poni crossover manga that appeared in Azumanga Daioh's 10th anniversary book Osaka Banpaku.
The story of the manga revolves around Rebecca "Becky" Miyamoto, an 11-year-old child prodigy who ends up teaching an oddball high school class in Japan. The manga has been running in Monthly G Fantasy since 2000. Hikawa had said in 2009 that he would end the manga after 159 installments. However, he then started a new stage and continued the manga for two more years.
In 2005, the anime studios GANSIS and SHAFT produced a 26-episode series which ADV Films (and later Funimation) released in North America.
