The live-action film adaptation of Rieko Saibara's Mainichi Kaasan family comedy manga won the Best Film for Asian New Talent Award at the 14th Annual Shanghai International Film Festival on Friday. Director Shōtarō Kobayashi appeared in person to accept the award, and he thanked the cast and staff.
The festival will present the main awards of the festival, the Golden Goblet Awards, at its closing ceremonies on Sunday. Fumihiko Sori's live-action film of Asao Takamori and Tetsuya Chiba's classic boxing manga Ashita no Joe and Sabu's live-action film of Yumi Unita's Bunny Drop (Usagi Drop) manga are both representing Japan in the Golden Goblet nominations. Yoichi Sai (Kamui Gaiden) is a judge at the festival.
The Crunchyroll website began streaming the English-subtitled anime adaptation of Mainichi Kaasan under the name Kaasan - Mom's Life outside Japan in 2009.
