A footnote in the latest installment of the Bakuman.anime manga has announced this week that the manga artist Takeshi Obata is creating the designs for an anime adaptation of an unnamed "literary masterpiece." More details will be revealed in future issues of Shueisha's Weekly Shonen Jump magazine. Obata illustrated the covers for the recent reprintings of several well-known novels from Shueisha, including Osamu Dazai's No Longer Human (Ningen Shikkaku), Ryūnosuke Akutagawa's Hell Screen (Jigoku Hen), and Soseki Natsume's Kokoro. (All three novels have been published in English without Obata's illustrations.)
Besides Bakuman., Obata also drew the anime Death Note, Hikaru no Go, and Ral Ω Grad manga. Viz Media published these three manga titles in North America. Viz also released the Death Note anime, the live-action Death Note films, and the Hikaru no Go anime wholesale.
Usamaru Furuya (51 Ways to Save Her) just launched a manga version of No Longer Human in Shinchosha's Comic Bunch magazine in February. Nariko Enomoto (Lost Girl, Get Boy) adapted Kokoro into a manga wholesale in Shogakukan's Big Comic Superior magazine in 2005.
